FIRST HAWAIIAN HISTORY:

Bishop & Co. was founded in 1858 by local merchants Charles Reed Bishop and William A. Aldrich. Under the rules of the autonomous Kingdom of Hawai’i, this was the first successful banking partnership.

It operated out of a basement room on Kaahumanu Street’s “Make & Anthon’s Building.” Bishop & Co. received $4,784.25 in deposits on the first day of operation. Samuel M. Damon purchased Bishop & Co. from Charles Bishop in 1895.

Bishop & Co. launched its first branch in Hilo in 1910. In 1911, it launched its first Kauai branch in Waimea. Bishop & Co. became the Bank of Bishop & Co. in 1919. The bank gradually expanded during the 1920s, purchasing the Bank of Honolulu in 1922, adding a branch in Kona in 1923, and the third branch on Lanai in 1924.

After merging with First National Bank of Hawaii, First American Savings Bank, Army National Bank of Schofield Barracks, and Baldwin Bank (Maui) in 1929, the bank’s development stalled. Bishop First National Bank of Honolulu was the bank’s new name.
